That’s right! It’s that wonderful time of year where YOU get to vote for your new VicSRC Executive Committee members. The VicSRC Student Executive Advisory Committee (the Executive Committee) is made up of 15 students from year 7 to grade 12 who are completing secondary education in Victoria and it’s their job to govern VicSRC and take action on the priorities identified by students across the state at VicSRC’s flagship student-led event, Congress! Each Executive Committee member is elected by their peers every year and that’s where you come in! So, now’s the time for you to get behind your Victorian candidates.
Why is it so important to vote?
Without your votes, there is no Executive Committee! The Executive Committee governs VicSRC and plays a vital role in putting the organisation’s advocacy priorities into action. Voting for who you believe would best represent Victorian students at a state level is a big deal but also incredibly exciting, so be sure to inform yourself by reading all of the nomination statements and consider who you think will best represent you when working with decision-makers and advocating on your behalf on issues identified by students in the Victorian education system.
VicSRC has noted that at Congress over the past few years, Victorian students have been incredibly passionate about wanting to know more about civics and citizenship and learn the real world skill of voting. The right to vote for our elected representatives is a significant part of our democracy, and you don’t even have to wait until you’re 18 to make a difference! Voting for your Executive Committee is the perfect way to learn about voting right now, before you can participate in local, state and federal elections.
We’re so excited to be partnering with the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) and it is through this collaboration that we are aiming to aid students in learning more about democracy, voting and civic participation. Head to the VEC’s Passport to Democracy (https://passport.vec.vic.gov.au/students/vote) to learn more about why voting is so important as well as things to consider before you vote.
