This global pandemic has really thrown us all into the deep end so quickly, hasn’t it? Just really challenging our skills, distancing us from others, and making us fight for our lives and a cure…

While all these essential workers are out being… essential, what are we doing here at home? Nothing but being bored, existing in bed, and eating ALL the food in the house. This situation is really trying to test our patience, and we are discovering new sides to ourselves. We are trying out new things and expanding on our old skills.

But sometimes, there really isn’t anything to do; there are only so many series you can stream before you run out of seasons, and there are only so many YouTube videos to watch before you’ve subscribed to every channel to ever exist. That’s why I’m here, writing this: if you’re looking for a new hobby to try out, or just something interesting you know you will get wrapped up in, here are some suggestions given to me by other teenagers, and also some from myself, of different things you can try out during this pandemic.

Which can be as high-key as using acrylic paints to create a beautiful masterpiece, or even just grabbing some random supplies and making some weird creation you could call art, but others call “destruction”. It’s really your choice! Do what tickles your fancy, and whatever fills up your schedule and seems enjoyable.

This is, once again, another broad topic. It can include quite a large variety: in baking, you can make desserts such as a delicious, moist chocolate cake, or some warm and soft – or hard – chocolate biscuits. Maybe you could try to make a full-on meal, or a pizza, or just go all out and become a restaurant. The possibilities for cooking are endless! If you’re really bored, get into cake decorating. I’m sure it will be fun!

Our third and final hobby here is also pretty broad, and also creative. There are two main types of makeup: beauty makeup, and special effects makeup. Also known as SFX makeup, the aim of this style is to change your look completely into a different person, maybe something gory, or even some sort of character. With beauty makeup, you can attempt to make yourself look prettier than you already are, or just… ruin it, and chuck some random abstract piece of art onto your face.

But, what if you don’t feel like getting up and being productive?

That’s so okay. Other than the above hobbies, there are also other things you can do. Instead of getting up and being productive, I can recommend a few shows or movies to watch:

A musical based on the songs of ABBA.

An superhero action-comedy based on the DC Comics character.

A romantic musical drama featuring the inimitable Lady Gaga.

Star Wars is a huge franchise encompassing everything from the live-action original films, the new era films, animated series, even Lego versions! If you’re new to it, you could start by watching the live-action films in their episodic order:

  1. Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
  2. Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)
  3. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)
  4. Solo (2018)
  5. Rogue One (2016)
  6. Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)
  7. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  8. Episode VI: The Return of the Jedi (1983)

Or, you can get a little creative with the viewing order – there’s a few different ways to try!

A Disney+ original, based on the novel of the same name.

If you also need some fresh songs to liven up your bland and old playlist, I have a few recommendations. I like to add in some new and exciting music genres and just accept anything for its sound. Some of my favourite genres include slow love ballads, rock covers of pop songs, and K-pop.

Some individual songs I and others recommend are:

Now, all of these are really good suggestions, but if they’re not your vibe you can look up different pre-made playlists on Spotify and YouTube based on your own music tastes! There is definitely a whole load of answers here, and there is something to suit everyone.

I know that this time is tough, and it seems like it will never end. Hold on tight, because this is going to be a bumpy ride! But we are all strong and we will get through all of this, together. Keep smiling, keep your head up. Things will start to look up for you and all of this will soon just be a distant memory.
